Portland, Connecticut

Portland, Connecticut

Welcome to Portland, Connecticut! This small town in Middlesex County is located in the heart of New England and is known for its picturesque Brownstone Quarries National Historic Site. While this may be the town’s most popular tourist attraction, there is so much more to see and do here. In this guide, we will explore everything that Portland has to offer visitors. From golfing and kayaking to hiking and biking, you’ll find something for everyone in this charming community. So pack your bags and get ready to explore all that Portland has to offer!

Portland is located near Middlesex Community College and Butternut Hollow Park in central Connecticut. In 2022, the population was around 5,000 people. The weather in this region is typical of New England with hot, humid summers and cold, snowy winters, which makes the town an ideal place for seasonal sports. The town is also home to three golf courses, a variety of wineries, and many kayaking and boating opportunities.

The town is known for the Brownstone Quarries National Historic Site. This site is a U.S. National Park Service landmark that was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971. The quarries were in operation from 1853 to 1914 and produced a type of brownstone that was used in many iconic buildings, such as the New York City Public Library and the U.S. Capitol Building. The quarries are now a popular tourist attraction and offer visitors the opportunity to explore the tunnels and caves that were created by the quarrying process.

In addition to the Brownstone Quarries, Portland is home to a variety of other attractions, including:

  • Butternut Hollow Park: This park is located in the heart of Portland and offers visitors a variety of activities, including hiking, fishing, and picnicking.
  • Middlesex Community College: This college is located in Portland and offers visitors a variety of educational opportunities.
  • The Air Line Trail: This historic trail was once used by the New York, New Haven, and Hartford Railroad. It is now a popular destination for hikers, bikers, and runners.
  • The Connecticut River: This river offers visitors a variety of recreational opportunities, including boating, fishing, and kayaking.
  • The Goodspeed Opera House: This historic theater is located in East Haddam and offers visitors a variety of theatrical performances.

Portland also hosts a variety of yearly events, including the Portland Fair (held in September), the Brownstone Park Winter Carnival (held in February), and the Connecticut River Paddlefest (held in May).

Visitors often find that the best way to experience everything that Portland has to offer is by staying in one of our local bed and breakfasts or inns. These establishments offer visitors a unique perspective on life in this small town and provide easy access to all of the area’s attractions.
